Getting drunk from Durian
Getting drunk from Durian
During my journey through south east Asia there have been several myths have come across. Like Durian.
Durian is commonly known as “the king of fruits” and one common myth about this fruit is that you can get drunk from Durian if you eat too much.
I never really liked the fruit. I have tasted it some time ago but I never thought much if it. But I am curious of it and I find it really funny that so many almost worship Durian as if it was the one and only fruit here in Asia.
There is not one market that does not have Durian on offer and if you go to some night markets you can see whole carriages of them.
So I have set out on a mission to find out whether you actually can get drunk by eating Durian. Just because it sounds to silly to be true.
After searching the web for a while I found out that drinking alcohol and eating Durian as a combo can be very dangerous and sometimes fatal. But few reports of people getting drunk out of it.
I personally saw an older man sitting on a huge pile of Durian stacked on a horse carriage at one of the night markets in Sanur, Bali. Whether he was drunk from alcohol or Durian is not certain. But I know he was having a really good time while eating the Durian, being drunk senseless. So I’m thinking it has something to do with the fermentation process when the fruit is ripe.
I don’t know.
Even so, I think it is exciting and interesting to see a whole part of the world literally going bananas of this fruit. Most hotels and restaurants ban the fruit since the smell of it can cause people to vomit. It smells like dead mans feet or bad diapers being out for too long. And the smell won’t go away for days.
But people still smuggle them into their hotel rooms and many food chains has started to produce Durian flavoured food like ice cream, jam and candy.
But besides you might get drunk from Durian the fruit has a number of health benefits.
Durian contains a high level of potassium which is an electrolyte that helps you body control your body fluids and heart rate.
It contains a good level of fructose and sucrose to give you that energy boost.
Duran also contains a rare feature among fruits which is a B-complex group of vitamins, such as niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic, vitamin B5, vitamin B-6 and thiamin (vitamin B-1).
Among many other. It does contain a high level of carbohydrates and dietary fiber so although it can be laxative it is definitely not good for weight loss.
I am not a fan of Durian so I think I will leave them for someone else next time I am t the market. Have you ever gotten drunk from eating Durian?
