Cool Whip – cream or ice cream?

In the North Americas they have something called Cool Whip. A dangerous tub of deliciousness for those (like me) that has a major sweet tooth to maintain.

Here we use it for toppings for pancakes, waffles, in cake, well, just about everything that’s a dessert. But many use it as it is because the texture is like ice cream. But is it really?

Well, I like to eat it as it is. But in fact it is a cream and not an ice cream. Cool Whip is a “imitation” whipped cream, or whipped topping as the manufacturers call it.
The varieties currently sold are Original, Extra Creamy, French Vanilla, Chocolate, Light, Reduced Fat, Free (fat-free), and Sugar-Free.

What is Cool Whip exactly?

Cool Whip Original is made of water, hydrogenated vegetable oil (coconut and palm oil), high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, skimmed milk, light cream and less than 2% sodium caseinate (a milk derivative), natural and artificial flavor, xanthan and guargums and beta carotene (as a coloring).(wikipedia)

After traveling in Asia for almost a year I have seen what palm oil does to the natural environment. Huge areas are cut down to make way for big companies that use palm oil in products like food and cosmetics. And they don’t even hesitate to cut down the most delicate forests and even rainforests. Huge islands have been overtaken with palm oil plantations. An income for the locals for sure, but what about the environment. Birdlife and animals are almost non existent in these areas and there are little or no original vegetation left. It really is sad on a completely different level.
But I have to admit I really like Cool Whip, but I don’t want any animals to loose their homes because I have a sweet tooth to maintain. So I went online trying to find a substitute for Cool Whip.

And as I was browsing I realized that Cool Whip is a “imitation whipped cream”. Why can’t I just use some regular heavy cream instead?
So be it.
Next time I am baking a frozen cheesecake I will try heavy cream and add some confectioners sugar ad leave Cool Whip out of it.
Good conscious and good cake all in one.

Wish me luck!
